About
From the Aa is the result of a late-night conversation between Moya Sweeney and Archie Churchill-Moss, leading to the creation of a striking new body of music for two accordions. The project explores the shared ground — and distinctive differences — between Irish and mainland European accordion traditions, drawing on melody, rhythm and texture from both worlds.
Both musicians are revered artists in their own right, with extensive performance experience across the UK and Europe. When they met in Derry in 2020, it quickly became clear that their approaches to composition and arrangement were deeply complementary. What began as an exchange of ideas evolved into a collaborative writing process rooted in mutual curiosity, respect and a desire to push the accordion into new musical spaces.
The resulting music is contemporary, expressive and finely balanced— at times driving and rhythmic, at others spacious and reflective — allowing the two accordions to move between harmony, counterpoint and unison with remarkable clarity and warmth.
Following a highly successful UK tour in December, this concert marks the official launch of the duo's debut EP, From the Aa, presented as part of Belfast St Patrick's Music Festival. Audiences can expect an intimate and engaging performance that highlights both the individuality of the musicians and the strength of their shared musical voice.
This launch concert offers a unique opportunity to experience a fresh and imaginative accordion project at the moment of its emergence — music shaped by tradition, collaboration and the thrill of discovery.
