About
Beside Queen's University, Botanic Gardens & the Ulster Museum is Friar's Bush – an ancient place apart. This was the site of a community of holy men and an early church dedicated to St. Patrick. There is a treasure trove of stories from Irish history that were nearly lost to time. This place was a burying ground for at least 5 centuries and it closed in 1869. Hidden by high stone walls and two sets of gates, the graveyard is older than the town of Belfast!
This tour will bring you into an evocative green enclave of leaning headstones and crumbling memorials that tell the story of Belfast from the earliest times.
They are 'Friend's of Friar's Bush,'are a team of personable and professional guides. Let them tell you of the inspiring and tragic lives of our citizens. Tales of war, epidemic, famine and emigration. Stories of publicans & priests, artists & architects, soldiers & sailors, butchers, bakers & candlestick makers!
After spending 90 minutes with them visit The Jeggy Nettle, the traditional Irish pub next door. And maybe take advantage of the local eateries - you could spend a very enjoyable day in this part of town!
If accompanied by parents, primary school children go free. Wear appropriate clothing and suitable footwear, particularly in wet weather.
Bookings are not refundable.
