About
Join dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours on International Day of Slayer, 6/6/26, for an illustrated Terror Talk on how Satan got his claws into music.
It is a tale stretching back to around the ninth century, when 'the Devil's interval' was supposedly banned by the Catholic Church. This unsettling combination of notes came to be known as 'diabolus in musica' - 'the Devil in music'.
As time progressed, classical composers claimed to be inspired by Satanic visitations in their dreams or were accused of selling their souls to Lucifer in exchange for supernatural talent. Early blues, jazz and rock 'n' roll was often decried as 'the Devil's music'.
In the 1960s, occult rock bands such as Coven and Black Widow gave way to an ever more extreme orgy of outfits, from Black Sabbath to Venom, Slayer and the church-burning black metal scene.
So, come along to the iconic Sunflower Public House, buy a drink, pull up a seat and enter to the realm of Satan with Alternative Ulstours!
